What Hormones Are Released During Sex?

Sep 24, 2017

Getting sexually satisfied is probably one of the best feelings in the world.  It’s almost like a drug. This is why many people get addicted to sex. When you have great sex, your skin glows, stress reduces and your mood is enhanced. It gets better - it is also believed to boost your immune system. The euphoric feelings associated with sex can be attributed to the hormones released inthe process. Below we explore the hormones that make you feel so good.

Feel-Good Hormones Released During Sex

Oxytocin

This is the most common hormone released during sex. Studies have proven that this hormone is a natural pain reliever. Also referred to as the love hormone, this hormone is released from the brain before orgasm. It is released because the part of the brain associated with pain is stimulated during sexual arousal. Along with the love hormone, endorphins are also released. These endorphins are known to sooth impulses of the nerve that cause migraines, joint pain as well as menstrual cramping. It has been found that when women orgasm, their pain tolerance threshold goes up by up to 74.6%. Oxytocin helps in boosting our moods and also helps to form strong emotional bonds.

Endorphins

As mentioned above, these are released together with Oxytocin.  This is a natural stress reliever. People who have regular sex are usually in high spirits and are able to handle stress better. According to studies, regular sex can help ease the symptoms associated with depression.

Endorphins are also immune boosters. When this hormone is released when having sex, it stimulates the immune system and makes it more effective in fighting diseases. Researchers have discovered a higher level of immunoglobulin A in people who have regular intercourse. This is an antibody that protects the body from infections.

Estrogen

This is a hormone released by the female body. It is responsible for the glow women have after sex. Estrogen helps to maintain a healthier and smoother skin by promoting collagen production, which is responsible for the smooth, glowing effect. Apart from glowing skin, estrogen is also responsible for protecting women from Alzheimer’s disease, heart failure, and osteoporosis.

Testosterone

This is the sexual desire hormone. When this hormone is released in men during sex, it triggers a feeling of relaxation and positive energy. Helps men to deal better with stress and helps to boost their mood.

Serotonin

This is a natural chemical released by the body immediately after orgasm. It causes the individual to feel calm and satisfied. It is such an effective mood enhancer that medication such as Prozac, which treats depression, is created to enhance the production of this hormone.

Other hormones released during sex include:

  • Prolactin

This hormone promotes the formation of myelin, which is important for the central nervous system. For pregnant women, this hormone helps in the development of the lungs and immune system of the fetus.

  • Dopamine

Increase in the level of dopamine in the brain boosts focus and attention span. People who have regular sex are better at focusing and completing goals, and are better at concentration. In relationships, this hormone makes the couple dependent on each other and in some cases addicted to one another.

  • Norepinephrine

This is a hormone that generates increased energy and exhilaration as it gives the body a shot of natural adrenaline. This hormone is also connected to increased memory capacity. This is why intimate individuals remember every bit of each other’s features.

Why You Should Have Regular Sex

Apart from the benefits you get from the hormones released during sex, there are other benefits associated with having regular sex.

Bladder Control in Women

To avoid incontinence (leaking of urine due to weak muscles), a strong pelvic wall is important. Incontinence affects at least 30% of women at different times in their life. Good sex on the regular is great exercise for the pelvic muscles. During orgasm, the muscles contract and relax, and this helps strengthens them.

It Is Exercise

While it may not replace actual workout done in a gym, sex is actually good for burning calories. It is found to burn at least 5 calories per minute. Also, when done on a regular basis, it helps in attaining flexible joints. It is also a great form of cardio exercise since it engages your heart too. This reduces the chance of a heart attack.

You Sleep Better

Most women always wonder why some men fall into deep slumber immediately after sex. The good news is that it has nothing to do with the woman as an individual but more about the body. As stated above, there are hormones released that help in relaxation. They can also cause sleepiness. This sleep is deeper and more satisfying than other times.

Reduced Risk of Prostate Cancer

According to research, men who orgasm at least twenty times each month are at a lower risk of developing prostate cancer.

Increased Sex Drive

Low libido can be cured by having sex often. The more you have it, the more you will want it. In women, having regular sex enhances vaginal lubrication, elasticity and blood flow. This makes it easier for them to enjoy sex.

Improved Intimacy

Couples who have sex regularly are closer and more in touch with each other. This is partially attributed to the hormones released during sex.

Lack of sex is a contributing factor to divorces. Couples who have regular sex are less likely to separate and have an easier time solving their relationship issues.

Longevity

Sex is the secret to living longer. According to a study, middle-aged men who had more orgasms recorded half the death rate of those who had fewer orgasms. While there are a lot of factors that contribute to longevity, having satisfying sex makes it easier for one to live longer.
